THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST

IN CONTRIBUTING TO THIS PROJECT. What I need from you are traumatic locations. You've probably had some traumatic experiences while living in New York, and it's more than likely that you associate these experiences with the places where they occurred. Walking through this city can sometimes feel like navigating a minefield, trying to avoid haunted locations that remind you of the things that took place in them: a near-death experience; getting mugged; having your heart broken.

WHY AM I DOING THIS? Because terrible things happen to people everywhere, all the time. Not just the things that make the news, but the things that happen to regular people like you, the things that haunt you and that deserve to be acknowledged. I'm taking these pictures for you, and for me, and for everyone just like us.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE? Some of you are probably quite comfortable talking about the things that have happened to you; others might not be. But, for all of us, traumatic experiences are difficult to come to terms with. We all share a desire for these experiences to be acknowledged, and to know that our feelings about them are valid. When you submit a location to this project, you're telling someone what happened to you, giving your experience a voice, and you're getting a public acknowledgment in the form of a photograph. You're also making explicit your membership in a community of people who have had experiences like yours.

HOW TO SUBMIT. Think about your most traumatic New York experiences and the locations that you associate with them. I've put together a handy little map for entering locations. The map is only for location entry — it won't be used in the final presentation of the photographs. Because I want you to feel completely comfortable sharing your experiences with me, I have made the map completely anonymous: it won't show you anyone else's locations, nor will anyone else be able to see yours. In fact, once you enter a location it will disappear and even you won't be able to see it. Feel free to enter as many locations as you like, but try to include only locations that you associate with very deeply affecting experiences. Please be aware that some or all of the text that you enter may be displayed or presented online with the photographs I take. When you're ready, click the word contribute below.
